What is IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is a common condition that affects the digestive system. It causes symptoms like stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. The exact cause is unknown but sufferers report diet, lifestyle and environmental triggers. The diagnosis of IBS is given by a medical doctor once all other causes of these symptoms have been ruled out. It is more common in woman than men.

Some common IBS symptoms:

Changes in normal bowel movements, including constipation and diarrhoea, or both.

Changes in the appearance of stools

Bloating

Gas - burping and flatulence

Abdominal pains

Nausea, heartburn or acid reflux

Easily feeling full or loss of appetite

How to get control of your IBS

Avoid dietary triggers - often it can be gluten and dairy but can also be foods such as onions, garlic and peppers.
